DISCUSSION ITEMS AND MAIN DECISIONS MADE DURING COUNCIL MEETING:

Discussion Item

Main Decision(s) Made

1.

President             Carol Statter

  •   Received many positive comments regarding   the information and speakers at the mini seminar.  There were only 50 attendees for the morning   session and 67 for lunch.  We need to   explore the reasons for the decrease in attendance at our events. Thanks to   all who helped and attended the mini seminar!
  •   The Board voted unanimously to make a   five year donation commitment of $5,000 per year to be matched by the   Mitchell-Mouton Scholarship Initiative.    The current funding as of the 2014-15 school year produces $1,517 for   an undergraduate student.  Adding an   additional $50,000 to the endowed scholarship will pay 5%, producing $2,500.  Once the pledge is complete, a student   would receive $4,000 per year. With tuition at $15,000 a year currently,   $4,000 would be substantial.  The   university would like to publicize the large gift.
  •   We are still working on the website and   its ability to prohibit non-members from registering using the member   price.  The site can be set up to allow   only members access to the lower price and non-members access to the higher   price.  The issue comes when a person   is registering for more than one person.    In order to allow that to happen, members would be set up with access   to both rates and non-members would only been allowed to register using the   higher rate.  This could cause problems   for non-member “assistants” who register several employees for events who would   not be able to register members at the lower rate.  Although this feature was one of the major   reasons for upgrading the website, The Board agreed that the solution   suggested would cause more problems for our members and guests and recommended   we leave the registration as is and check registration against our membership   list.

  •   Attempts were made to partner with the   South Alabama Regional Planning Commission to publicize the SARPC Career Fair   and provide HR information such as resume writing and interview skills via   morning news shows prior to the event.    Fox 10 and WKRG were both contacted but the producers apparently did   not feel the information was newsworthy.    Had the programs been scheduled, the weather probably would have preempted   them that week.  We will add to the   SHAPE report to show our efforts.

College Relations – Marjorie Icenogle

  •   The Mobile Scholarship winner is Meredith Holmes from   Birmingham.    She is a junior majoring in HR.  She helped with the conference   and sold tickets for drawing a couple of months ago.
  •   Working on a leadership conference that will be held   in Birmingham   in September to get student chapters more involved.
  •   The Student Chapter elected its new officers this   past week, so officers will be working over the summer on chapter events.
  •   Marjorie wants to thank everyone for their support of   the USA Student Chapter.

4.

Legislative   Liaison/Speakers        Tom Woodford

  •   Tom is providing the legislative update   for our May meeting
  •   Our June speaker is Al Lucia with his   topic “Taking HR to the Bottom Line”
  •   July speaker is Mary White
  •   Our September speaker will be Elizabeth   Doehring presenting the Wellness Alabama initiative
  •   Our October speaker will be Daniel   Bloom and his topic is “In Plain Sight: Finding and Eliminating   Organizational Inefficiencies” which is eligible for strategic credits.  We are paying Mr. Bloom $200 for the event.
